I have had the good fortune of working in both Sell-side and Buy Side Equity research (I work for the Buy-side even now)Over the years have interacted with many folks who are so passionate about Equity research that there is no limit to the way they would study a stock (Jugaad and whatnot)But at the same time, there are many with the tag of Equity research analysts that do the process solely in a mechanical way, with no passion associatedThis is kind of a weird problem – Let me tell you why and give you a takeaway as wellI get so many messages still to seek help for an Equity Research Job (this is a highly contested title for those who do not know)I was one of those people as well – I must have messaged 200+ people for the help and one day I realized how about I start doing equity research on my own – that’s when I started writing on Quora and started my blog and then eventually Linkedin and TwitterThanks to my writing and blogs, I got my first equity research Job at Samco. The interviewer didn’t ask me a single question from my CV, they asked me about my blogs and writing. The same thing repeated at my buy Side Job at BP Wealth (Fun story – the CEO of BP Wealth Mr Yuvraj Thakker barged into the interview as he had some work with the head of research and he again asked me everything about my writing)So to all those seeking the title of Equity Research Analyst for your CVs, don’t wait for a job, start equity research on your own today! When you start researching on your own and don’t wait for a job to come by (as I said the job is heavily contested for), it will open so many doors for you in your life and help you learn a lot. Trust me – I did the same and the results have been 100x! All the best! Keep studying 😊

Pathfinder Career Narratives 29 is written by Samantha Baggott, PhD, Senior Digital Business Analyst at Australia’s eSafety Commissioner and Director at Sequitur Consulting. Sequitur helps people with PhDs to transition to careers beyond academia. They share interviews and job search tips to help researchers find the career path that’s right for them. Dr Baggott has a PhD in Cognitive Science from Macquarie University in Australia. Samantha’s post-PhD career began at the same institution as a research administrator, then she worked in an outreach and communications role helping researchers to talk about their research findings to the general public, followed by a research evaluation role, before moving into data and analytics. This is an instructive reflection for researchers who are open minded about where a PhD might take them, written by a successful doctorate holder working at a national regulator. “I think all of these non-academic roles have benefitted from the skills I developed in my PhD. Things like the ability to look at things with a really broad, strategic mindset as well as being able to zoom into detail when it’s needed, being able to make sense of piles and piles of information (and to do so fairly quickly), and, as was the case with my PhD, the ability to ask the next right question when I don’t really know where a particular project is going to lead.”https://lnkd.in/eHivsCyB #researchers #universities #careers #transitions

Research is more than just a necessary task—it's a gateway to profound insights and possibilities. This article really highlights how interesting and rewarding a career in market research can be.It also points out how under-represented the industry is especially to those who are looking after finishing school or university. Before I worked in it I wasn't even 100% sure of what it was but after learning a lot and speaking to so many different experts across the field it's shown me how great of a career it can be for the right people. Definitely worth a read especially if you're considering a career in the area or you just want to learn a bit more about what makes it so interesting!

Interested in 'Equity Research' careers?I asked an Equity Research Analyst with more than 10 years of industry experience what their 2 favourite and 2 least favourite parts of their role was. Here's what they said:Pros:1. "You get to learn about how companies and consequently the world is changing from leaders in the field and get to speak to CEOs and CFOs who are leaders in their fields about this."2. "You have more control over when you work because you work quite independently so if you prefer mornings/evenings/weekends you can be quite flexible, as long as you get your work done."Cons:1. "Your work is never done so you never get a sense of completion because even after you analyse a company, things can change and your whole thesis could be wrong."2. "Performance isn't always correlated to hard work because sometimes very unexpected things can affect stock prices and you are predominantly measured on your results not on the work that you did."The full video (linked below) covers the following:1. An overview and breakdown of Equity Research2. Responsibilities of an Equity Research Analyst3. Pros and cons of the careerAlso linked below:'Get to Know: Equity Research'. New Year Resolution............As a Researcher!!! 😎 Every new year, I (and probably many others) start thinking about the resolutions they want to keep or the goals they want to achieve. (This is also where people tend to give up now, around the end of January.) I find it useful to do some introspection, figure out what I am working on, and make some plans for the future - which is the constant struggle of researcher (generally there is something to do) and it feels like we are always behind and accomplishing nothing. This is especially true in the context of a global pandemic that has upended data collection for human studies, forced most scientists to adapt to working from home, and created underlying stressors. Some well-thought-out goals can be helpful because they mark career advancement, whereas success seems to be achieved only at the end of a large (often years-long) research project. On the other hand, a high goal like "I will have first-author publications by the end of this year" seems completely useless and may just increase the pressure - with such a goal, you may succumb to the incentives, correct?
