side. >> good evening. i'm elizabeth cook. it follows this weekend's announcement from san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins that she is charging 26 protesters with false imprisonment, trespassing, unlawful assembly, and refusal to disperse. jenkins said some people stuck on the bridge last april missed important medical appointments. some say the d.a. is going way overboard in response to a nonviolent political action. >> everybody with over 40 charges each, it is a very dramatic draconian charging decision. it is in contrast to the other similar actions like the bay bridge 78. >> reporter: those facing charges for blocking traffic on the golden gate bridge surrendered to a show of support at the san francisco jail and attorney for the

protesters calls the charges unjustified, but specifically points to the last protest. >> i don't think this case should be charged personally, but what happened on the bay bridge and on the golden gate bridge are basically the exact same. >> reporter: it was back in march when the bay bridge 78 walked out of a courtroom to a cheering crowd, that day in the words of organizers, a complete vindication and victory. >> essentially the judge dismissed our case as of may 15th with a diversion offer of five hours community service and a little under 4,500 in restitution. >> this is really about time, place, and manner. >> reporter: district attorney brooke jenkins says the second act at the golden gate bridge comes with more charges, partly because of the outcome of the previous incident. >> there are elevated charges for eight of those individuals who we believe went to further lengths to plan that

demonstration and we have charged them with felony conspiracy. >> it is her discretion, but what we expect from district attorneys is consistency and a response to similar crimes with similar charges and we don't have that here. >> reporter: so the district attorney will have to make the case again, though this time with the help of several dozen people who were stuck in traffic and have been in contact with investigators. >> and so yes, we believe that those people will come forward and testify as this case moves forward. >> reporter: so the charging is at the discretion of the district attorney, but the outcome still largely at the discretion of a judge who could decide that the felonies should be reduced to misdemeanors. then we'd be back to where we were pretty much with the bay bridge cases. we will see. the first hearings are scheduled for tuesday morning. >> just hours after jenkins announced the charges on saturday morning a group of protesters against the war in gaza gathered in union square and marched to the fairmont hotel where vice president

kamala harris was staying for a weekend fundraiser. this week harris' running mate, minnesota governor tim walz, is heading out to talk to voters on his own and the trump campaign is now saying it was hacked by foreign actors. skyler henry has the very latest. >> reporter: former president donald trump's campaign says iran is behind a hack that gained access to what appeared to be its research on republican vice presidential candidate j.d. vance. the material was sent to politico and "the washington post" in late july from any none plus email account. chris krebs told "face the nation" moderator margaret brennan that more cyberattacks are likely. >> we have a long way to go in this election. i wouldn't be surprised to see russia enter the fray soon. >> reporter: trump is saying vice president harris used artificial intelligence to fake pictures showing large crowds at her rallies last week, but cbs news was one of the several news organizations on the campaign swing and verified

the battleground state of pennsylvania for a rally. we're getting our first look at some of the damage from a 4.4 earthquake. this is pasadena's city hall. water leaked there about an hour. the quake struck after noon in the el serino neighborhood in los angeles. people reported feeling it throughout l.a. county all the way to san diego. wow. that ring camera from inside a home in pasadena captured the shaking. >> particularly the crowd sort of getting behind, as we have a bit of an earthquake here in los angeles. we're going to make sure everything stays safe. everything's shaking. >> she kept her cool, didn't she? that was the moment the quake rocked the espn l.a. studio during a live interview. the quake struck on the first day of school for students in l.a. county, but no injuries or major damage has been reported. last week a 5.2 magnitude quake struck bakersfield and was felt

in l.a. county. more than a dozen aftershocks followed that. the strongest was a 4.5. more bay area students heading back to school today, including those in the oakland unified school district, and hundreds of oakland students have some brand-new supplies and even a fresh look to start the new year. they received backpacks, classroom supplies, new shoes, and even new hair-cuts. it's all thanks to the annual backpack giveaway organized by oakland rapper and philanthropist mistah f.a.b. also in oakland the roots sports club announced today it will play at the coliseum next season. this marks the pro soccer team's return to oakland for the first time since 2022. mayor sheng thao says the move will also keep jobs in oakland. >> not only will we be watching soccer here, professional soccer here at the coliseum, we'll be saving jobs at the coliseum. we know that the coliseum is home to many people when it comes to the jobs, the

vendors. it's right here directly, mainly the people that live in oakland that work here in the coliseum. >> the oakland roots and soul teams hope to open a temporary stadium with 10,000 seats and a lot near the coliseum with the goal to open by 2026. meantime the a's have a month and a half left in their final season at the coliseum. the city and the team agreed to sell the site to the african american sports and entertainment group. tickets are sold out for the a's' final game at the coliseum september 26th. a bit of a shake-up ahead of the 9ers' first preseason game at levi's stadium on sunday. vern glenn joins us as the team looks to turn the page on the preseason opener in nashville. >> well, liz, they had 23 players hurt before the game last saturday. two more were hurt in the game. this injury issue is so bad coach kyle

but today around two dozen are still parked along zoo road and for many of these people, including families, living in these rvs, this is the second time they've been told to pack it up this year. signs now posted on zoo street say no stopping or parking starting august 14th , which is wednesday, because of street cleaning and pavement striping. some say they plan on moving their rvs every three days to different spots within the city to try to stay above the law. we spoke with one woman who says it's her only choice, says she's applied for several apartments and keeps being rejected. >> we don't mind leaving the rv. we're only there because we need to. it's not comfortable. it's not something that oh, no, it's because they're lazy. they don't work a lot. they don't want to work to pay for a house. we work a lot. >> most of the people were parked along winston street a few weeks ago when the city gave a similar warning and this is what it looked like after,

as the shark started following his friend up the harbor last tuesday. ian realizes just how lucky they are the shark didn't attack them, but says it was more surreal than scary. >> it followed my buddy for a couple minutes and then we moved closer together and we watched it circle back around and start following me and we kind of led it off towards some seals and looked over our shoulders for another hour or two and everything was fine. i never thought in a million years i would get to experience one close up, you know. i feel lucky to have done that and done that with a friend who could keep me calm and i could keep him calm. we tried to not bug it. >> yeah. that's probably good advice. when you see that fin, doesn't your heart skip a beat? ian shared his video with shark enthusiasts on the internet who suspect it was a great white based on its size, about 14 feet long. he says it may be a while before they go out kayaking again, but he

definitely has a tale to share with his sixth grade students. they'll think that's amazing. let's go to the fire watch now. hundreds of homes are threatened by a wildfire burning near the california-border. the fire started as a car fire in washoe county. it's grown to nearly 700 acres with no containment. about 400 homes are threatened. a red flag warning is in effect in th paul, it's a good reminder we aren't out of fire season yet. >> especially once we hit the back half of august into september. so far it hasn't been too bad around the bay area. our air quality is even better than recently. let's look at the big picture pattern, see what else is in store. a nice start to the week today, a live look outside from

mount diablo, time lapse showing the clouds passing through kind of filtering the sunshine and casting shadows on the valleys below. here's how the pattern will change. the little ripple in the atmosphere that allowed the marine layer to be disrupted today will pass through and temperatures will warm up a bit tuesday, near normal temperatures, and very few day-to-day changes through the week, settling into a typical august weather pattern into the weekend and likely much of next week as well. looking outside now from the mark hopkins hotel, still seeing some of that sea haze, not full fledged fog, temperature downtown only 62 degrees, in oakland 68 degrees, a cool evening as the giants start off a series against the atlanta braves at oracle park, 60:45 first pitch, temperatures likely around 60 degrees at that point. across the bay and farther inland 70s and low 80s. we are going to warm up a little bit tomorrow to normal for this time of year. the fog won't be terribly widespread

to start the day tuesday, patchy fog to begin the early morning hours. that won't take long to back up to the coast. it's another day we'll see sunshine along the coast. enjoy that because we'll be back into our typical fogust pattern the rests of this week. let's look at where temperatures end up later tonight on our floor map. in the north bay temperatures will be coolest, lows dropping down to around 50 degrees in petaluma, upper 40s for santa rosa. that's below average for this time of year. when you're starting off a little below average, the atmosphere has to do some work to warm up. even the warmest spots are only in the upper 50s east of mount diablo and the delta below 60 degrees for a few minutes early tomorrow morning, mostly 50s across the entire bay area, even in the santa clara valley where you've been bottoming out just above 60 degrees. you should drop into the 50s to begin the day tomorrow. there we go, make sure i don't blend in with the maps. high temperatures tomorrow warm up to the neighborhood of what's normal

for this time of year, 82 degrees in san jose, temperatures inland in the east bay mid- to upper 80s, close to 90 degrees, but when even the hottest spots are around 90, we're doing fine mid-august. temperatures around the bay, upper 60s in san francisco, mid-70s for oakland, north bay lower 80s until you go farther north and farther inland, upper 80s around santa rosa by tomorrow afternoon. a look at the ten-day temperature outlook and we'll see a warm-up towards the tail end of that ten-day temperature outlook. the average high temperature in livermore as a representative of inland locations, 88 degrees. we stay below that into the beginning of next week. even once we warm up a bit, slightly above average by the back half of next week. in the short term while we'll see good air quality, we'll keep an eye on the various fires burning around the state and tracking the smoke plumes produced by those fires. we're

looking at the smoke produced by the park fire, not nearly as abundant as when the fire was really growing by leaps and bounds. there's still going to be some smoke drifting through the atmosphere. the persistent onshore wind will keep the smoke directed away from the bay area, looks like good air quality across the board for several days. inland temperatures close to normal, upper 80s, some spots the low 90s, and it's really not that hot for the middle of august. around the bay temperatures climbing up to the low to mid-70s while along the coast, you'll be confined to the lower 60s, which is not a surprise. you do get one day of some clearing allowing some sunshine to filter through before the fogust weather is back. gray skies with patches of mist and drizzle into early

month. veronica fimbrus is an live-positive trans woman whose journey from new york city to san francisco transformed her life. now the manager of clinical assistance and volunteers for the san francisco aids foundation, veronica's dedication to her community is extraordinary. our jose martinez spent time with her discussing her journey and goals for the future. >> reporter: san francisco transformed into a sanctuary for veronica fim after she received a life altering diagnosis of aids in new york city over 20 years ago. today she embodies the strength that's marked her incredible journey. >> coming here saved my life. when i was in new york city, they told me get your things together because you're getting ready to die and that was pretty devastating. of course, here it is years later and i'm a long term survivor of hiv and aids. >> reporter: today veronica

serves as manager of clinical assistance and volunteers at the san francisco aids foundation, but her path to this role was far from easy. when she arrived in san francisco in 1996, she was reeling from the loss of her brother and partner to aids. armed with a little more than a handful of dollars and a heart full of determination, she made the city her home and dedicated her life to helping others navigate the challenges she once faced herself. >> whenever i go away from san francisco, my heart is still here. >> reporter: as a child, she was deeply moved by images of civil right struggles on television. at 17 she was inspired by the stonewall riots she witnessed in new york city. >> the day the stonewall happened i was 17 walking around barefoot with love beads on and all that stuff. people were running down christopher street with blood coming down,

streaming down their faces. i was like what happened? what's going on? that was the riots there at stonewall. they happened right in front of my face. >> reporter: at the san francisco aids foundation veronica leads a passionate team of clinical assistants and volunteers. her advocacy focuses on insuring transgender individuals receive the healthcare they deserve. she says discrimination, lack of provider knowledge, and limited access to gender affirming treatments are common obstacles. this can create an environment of mistrust and fear discouraging many from seeking necessary medical attention. >> i work with the community that i love, which is my own community, and i'm able to give back to the trans community. >> reporter: kyle temple, associate vice president of behavioral health in community programs at the sf aids foundation, says misgendering and be invasive questioning and

outright discrimination often lead to discrepancies in the healthcare system. >> it's really a more holistic and whole person approach, right? so it's not just about access to medical care or medical interventions. it's also engaging folks around their mental health, around their substance health, having them connected with other folks in their community to provide social support. >> reporter: that's why veronica's role is so important. >> to have somebody with veronica's experience, you know, working in this context, it's hugely important in connecting the dots and being able to pass on that knowledge and that wisdom to the next generation of providers. >> reporter: in 2023 the foundation delivered over 12,000 hiv tests and enrolled 3,100 people in its prep program. veronica's dedicated

safe space for people to focus on their own wellness. >> we're getting direct feedback from clients and getting to witness their faces when they walk in, reporting they feel joy, affirmed, supported and choosing to stay in the space after therapy for hours hanging out, doing puzzles, connecting with other folks, connecting with community. so it really is a beautiful co-location it get these clinical services and community support in one. >> in addition to nurse services for patients, the county is helping to connect patients with providers and training resources to properly serve the south bay's lgbtq+ community. >> folks were experiencing things like goes to places where folks didn't really understand. the providers didn't really understand, even terminology, right? like what words folks were using to talk about their gender identity, their sexual orientation, et cetera. folks weren't really aware of how important language
