80 years ago today, Charles A. Sheller of West Chester was among the Allied military forces who landed on a beach in France. This extraordinary invasion, known as D-Day, was the beginning of the end of World War II. Troops made amphibious landings and parachuted inland from the air. Sheller served in the 3053rd Engineer Combat Battalion, landing on the Tare Green Beach near St. Mere Eglise under enemy fire. His battalion cleared mines and laid mesh roads in the sand. Sheller received 5 battle stars for campaigns in Italy, Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, and Central Germany. With this post, CCHC is launching a series to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the final year of World War II. If you have World War II family stories to share, we want to know. #dday, #ww2 #worldwar2 #normandy #museums #chestercountypa

On Thursday, November 2nd, 2023, CCHC proudly hosted a special screening of the new Netflix feature film Rustin, a profound portrayal of civil rights activist, and West Chester native, Bayard Rustin. The film focused on his work as the architect of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The event, which marked a significant milestone in the History Center’s commitment to cultural education and community engagement, was met with an overwhelming response, filling the venue to capacity with distinguished guests and community members. The special screening was the result of a unique collaboration between the Chester County History Center and Netflix, underscoring the History Center’s role as a prominent cultural hub in the region and its ability to attract partnerships with leading global entities. The Chester County History Center extends its gratitude to Netflix, the Chester County Community Foundation, and West Chester University of Pennsylvania for their support of this event, as well as all the attendees for making the screening a resounding success.#chestercountyhistorycenter #chestercountyhistory #bayardrustin #rustinfilm #rustin #specialscreening #netflix #chestercounty #westchesterpa #chestercountypa
