First Saturday Rosary with 15 minute meditation on Mysteries (2024)

The First Saturday devotion to Our Lady of Fatima seems hard to fulfill with the 15 minute meditation on all of the mysteries. You may wonder how to fulfill the 15 minute meditation of all the mysteries of the rosary on each First Saturday of 5 consecutive months. The First Saturday devotion, as told by Our Lady of Fatima to Sr. Lucia, Servant of God, is given to us as a form of reparation for the sins and blasphemies of mankind. Many people struggle with how to do the 15 minute meditation part of the First Saturday devotion.

The First Saturday devotion can be done through a form of mental prayer, where you do a 15 minute meditation using your imagination on each of the mysteries while reading scripture verses that describe in detail each of these mysteries. The scriptural rosary can help you imagine yourself in each scene as you fulfill your First Saturday devotion.

Using Mental Prayer in First Saturday Rosaries

First Saturday rosaries can be fulfilled by contemplating each mystery like a movie in your mind. To do a 15 minute meditation you will want to pray each of the 5 mysteries slowly, meditating on the verses with each Hail Mary. Imagine Jesus looking at you – as if you are there – as you meditate on each scripture verse in your decade. If you are not familiar with mental prayer, please visit our page on it.

This rosary should take about 1 hour 15 minutes to complete when meditated on slowly as part of the 15 minute meditation on all of the mysteries. After you finish each decade, take out a journal and write about what you thought, felt, or imagined as you were praying for the remaining minutes of your 15 minute meditation. The recitation of each decade will likely take about 10 minutes. Your journaling as part of the 15 minute meditation should fill the remaining time. It is okay if you have little to write and it does not take 5 minutes to jot things down. Just use that extra minute or two of your 15 minute meditation for time in the prayer of silence or to speak from your heart to God. If you are in the adoration chapel, this is a good time to just gaze at the Lord. If you are at home or in the church, gaze at an image of Jesus that is available to you and fill your heart with love for Him and for Mary. This is a simple method of praying the rosary for the First Friday devotion and accomplishing the 15 minute meditation request from Our Lady of Fatima.

The First Saturday 15 Minute Meditation Grows Our Love for God

The point of doing the 15 minute meditation on all the mysteries is to grow your love for the Lord in an intimate way. The First Saturday devotion by Our Lady of Fatima helps us really ponder the life of Christ. The First Saturday rosary puts us into deep contemplation as we spend our 15 minute meditation on each mystery. The method of mental prayer will help you spend quality time with Jesus and Mary and you will come to prefer the First Saturday rosaries over regular rosaries. The First Saturday rosary brings you so much closer to Jesus and Mary.

About the First Saturday Devotion

Fulfilling the 15 Minute Meditation on the Mysteries of the Rosary

You may be wondering what is the history behind the First Saturday devotion? The First Saturday devotion came about on December 10, 1925, when Our Lady came once again to Sr. Lucia, who was at the time a postulant of the Dorothean Convent in Pontevedra. The Virgin Mary appeared to her with the Child Jesus in her arms. She put one hand on Sr. Lucia’s shoulder and with the other she pointed to her heart, which was surrounded by thorns.

Jesus spoke to Sr. Lucia:

He said, “Have compassion on the Heart of your most holy Mother, covered with thorns, with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment, and there is no one to make an act of reparation to remove them.”

Then the Virgin Mary spoke.

She said,Look, my daughter, at my Heart, surrounded with thorns with which ungrateful men pierce me every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. You at least try to console me and say that I promise to assist at the hour of death, with the graces necessary for salvation, all those who, on the First Saturday of five consecutive months, shall confess, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary, and keep me company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the fifteen mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me.”

Mary is always present with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. If you come to the adoration chapel on a First Saturday and offer a rosary with a 15 minute meditation on each of the mysteries you fulfill this part of the request that the Virgin Mary made to Sr. Lucia. You may want to continue the First Saturday devotion long after your fifth First Saturday passes.

The First Saturday 15 Minute Meditation is Reparation

The First Saturday devotion is meant to help you grow your love for God and for poor sinners. By making this sacrifice on the First Saturday of five consecutive months you show love for God, sorrow for the blasphemies against His Mother, and charity towards sinners. The First Saturday devotion is completed after you have made this rosary prayer of reparation with the 15 minute meditation on all the mysteries on the First Saturday of 5 consecutive months in a row.

The Joyful Mysteries contain a beautiful message depicting Mary’s role as Mother of God. This rosary is meant to help you contemplate the 5 joyful mysteries as part of your First Saturday devotion. Your First Saturday devotion is in reparation for the following 5 types of offenses and blasphemies against the Immaculate Heart of Mary:

  • Blasphemies against her Immaculate Conception
  • Blasphemies against her virginity
  • Blasphemies against her divine maternity and refusing to recognize her as the mother of men.
  • Blasphemies of those who publicly seek to sow in the hearts of children indifference, scorn, or even hatred of the Immaculate Mother.
  • Offenses of those who outrage her directly in her holy image.

Consecration to the
Immaculate Heart of Mary

By Saint Maximilian Kolbe

O Immaculata, Queen of Heaven and earth, refuge of sinners and our most loving Mother, God has willed to entrust the entire order of mercy to you. I, a repentant sinner, cast myself at your feet humbly imploring you to take me with all that I am and have, wholly to yourself as your possession and property. Please make of me, of all my powers of soul and body, of my whole life, death and eternity, whatever most pleases you.

If it pleases you, use all that I am and have without reserve, wholly to accomplish what was said of you: “She will crush your head,” and, “You alone have destroyed all heresies in the world.” Let me be a fit instrument in your immaculate and merciful hands for introducing and increasing your glory to the maximum in all the many strayed and indifferent souls, and thus help extend as far as possible the blessed kingdom of the most Sacred Heart of Jesus. For wherever you enter, you obtain the grace of conversion and growth in holiness, since it is through your hands that all graces come to us from the most Sacred Heart of Jesus.

℣. Allow me to praise you, O sacred Virgin.

℟. Give me strength against your enemies.

AMEN.

The Joyful Mysteries are usually prayed on Mondays and Thursdays, and also on Sundays during Advent and the Christmas season. This First Saturdays devotion is for the Joyful Mysteries but you are welcome to pray the other mysteries as well.

First Joyful Mystery

First Saturday Rosary with 15 minute meditation on Mysteries (1)

The Annunciation

The Annunciation to Mary inaugurates “the fullness of time”, the time of the fulfillment of God’s promises and preparations. Mary was invited to conceive him in whom the “whole fullness of deity” would dwell “bodily”. The divine response to her question, “How can this be, since I know not man?”, was given by the power of the Spirit: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you.” (CCC 484).

We contemplate in this mystery how Mary’s Immaculate Heart was meek and humble. She shows us what it means to be poor in spirit and how these virtues allow the soul to be in union with the Holy Spirit and perfectly aligned with the divine will of God. The Mother of God, with complete faith and trust, says yes to the calling without hesitation or thought of what it might cost her. She puts herself completely under the divine will of God with total abandonment. This is her fiat. She proclaims that God’s plan must be fulfilled in her according to His wishes. We ponder how we may do the same in our own lives. How might we abandon our own will and say yes to God’s divine will for our lives?

Our Father

℣. Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.

℟. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

The Visitation

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.” John was “filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb” by Christ himself, whom the Virgin Mary had just conceived by the Holy Spirit. Mary’s visitation to Elizabeth thus became a visit from God to his people.

Mary, the all-holy ever-virgin Mother of God, is the masterwork of the mission of the Son and the Spirit in the fullness of time. For the first time in the plan of salvation and because his Spirit had prepared her, the Father found the dwelling place where his Son and his Spirit could dwell among men. (CCC 717, 721).

Mary’s Immaculate heart teaches us how to act in accordance with the divine will of God. When Mary is told by God that her cousin is pregnant, she accepts this divine message as a call to action. Her immediate response is to love and serve her cousin. Being in union with the Holy Spirit, Mary acts according to the divine will of God and immediately goes to visit her cousin in need, in an act of generosity and love for her. When Mary arrives to her cousin’s house, she comes to serve and not to be served. She chooses most willfully to commit herself to humble tasks and all the while she praises God. We ponder how we may do the same in our own lives. How might we abandon the sin of selfishness and say yes to God’s divine will for us and to grow in the virtue of generosity?

Our Father

℣. Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.

First Saturday Rosary with 15 minute meditation on Mysteries (3)

The Birth of Our Lord

The Holy SpiritpreparedMary by his grace. It was fitting that the mother of him in whom “the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily”should herself be “full of grace.” She was, by sheer grace, conceived without sin as the most humble of creatures, the most capable of welcoming the inexpressible gift of the Almighty. It was quite correct for the angel Gabriel to greet her as the “Daughter of Zion”: “Rejoice.”It is the thanksgiving of the whole People of God, and thus of the Church, which Mary in her canticlelifts up to the Father in the Holy Spirit while carrying within her the eternal Son. In Mary, the Holy Spiritfulfillsthe plan of the Father’s loving goodness. Through the Holy Spirit, the Virgin conceives and gives birth to the Son of God. By the Holy Spirit’s power and her faith, her virginity became uniquely fruitful. In Mary, the Holy Spiritmanifeststhe Son of the Father, now become the Son of the Virgin. She is the burning bush of the definitive theophany. Filled with the Holy Spirit, she makes the Word visible in the humility of his flesh. It is to the poor and the first representatives of the gentiles that she makes him known. Finally, through Mary, the Holy Spirit begins to bring men, the objects of God’s merciful love, into communion with Christ. And the humble are always the first to accept him: shepherds, magi, Simeon and Anna, the bride and groom at Cana, and the first disciples. (CCC 722-725).

Mary’s Immaculate Heart teaches us to accept whatever God, in His divine will, desires for us. In this mystery we witness the lowly manner in which the Son of God came into the world. He was not greeted as King by the world’s standards. There was no palace, no comforts, no familiar faces, no handmaid to assist the Mother of God in the delivery of her Son. Mary accepted all of this without complaint. She accepted the guests who came by way of angelic pronouncement. These were not princes, nor were they priests. They were lowly shepherds. In this moment, she greets her Son and her Savior, and praises God, pondering it all with wonderment. We ponder how we may do the same in our own lives. How might we abandon the sin of pride and say yes to God’s desire for the virtue of humility?

Our Father

℣. Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.

The Presentation of Our Lord

Thepresentation of Jesus in the templeshows him to be the firstborn Son who belongs to the Lord. With Simeon and Anna, all Israel awaits itsencounterwith the Savior-the name given to this event in the Byzantine tradition. Jesus is recognized as the long-expected Messiah, the “light to the nations” and the “glory of Israel”, but also “a sign that is spoken against”. The sword of sorrow predicted for Mary announces Christ’s perfect and unique oblation on the cross that will impart the salvation God had “prepared in the presence of all peoples”. (CCC 529).

Mary’s Immaculate Heart teaches us that she remained always in obedience to God’s law. We see her obediently offering her Son to God the Father, as is taught to the people of Israel. She comes to the temple to dedicate Jesus to God, knowing the prophesies about the Messiah and His mission. God responds to Mary by giving her a message from Simeon, one that confirms her fiat will be the cause of great future sufferings. Mary accepts this prophesy without complaint and in total obedience to the divine will of God. She shows us that she is completely united to the sufferings of her Son despite knowing there will be many sufferings as a result. We ponder how we may do the same in our own lives. How might we abandon the sin of disobedience and say yes to God’s desire for the virtue of obedience?

Our Father

Amen.

When eight days were completed for his circumcision, he was named Jesus, the name given him by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

Luke 2:21

℣. Hail Mary full of grace the Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

℟. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.

When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, they took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord,

Luke 2:22

℣. Hail Mary full of grace the Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

℟. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.

Just as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord,” and to offer the sacrifice of “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons,” in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord.

Luke 2:23-24

℣. Hail Mary full of grace the Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

℟. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.

Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the holy Spirit was upon him.

Fifth Joyful Mystery

First Saturday Rosary with 15 minute meditation on Mysteries (5)

Finding Jesus in the Temple

Thefinding of Jesus in the templeis the only event that breaks the silence of the Gospels about the hidden years of Jesus. Here Jesus lets us catch a glimpse of the mystery of his total consecration to a mission that flows from his divine sonship: “Did you not know that I must be about my Father’s work?” Mary and Joseph did not understand these words, but they accepted them in faith. Mary “kept all these things in her heart” during the years Jesus remained hidden in the silence of an ordinary life. (CCC 534).

Mary’s Immaculate Heart teaches us to trust in God in all things. We see how Mary, while searching for Jesus, has 3 days of suffering and separation, a foreshadowing of the time between the crucifixion and the resurrection. Mary’s heart is tested, and her patience is made known. When she sees Him in the temple she shows control over her emotions and when Jesus answers her, Mary’s Immaculate Heart accepts it, despite not understanding what it means. Mary shows us how to have patience and trust in God when we do not understand a situation. We ponder how we may do the same in our own lives. How might we abandon the sin of anger and say yes to God’s desire for the virtue of patience?

Amen.

First Saturday Devotion

with 15 Minute Meditation on all the Mysteries

Hail Holy Queen

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,
our life, our sweetness and our hope.
To you do we cry,
poor banished children of Eve.
To you do we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this valley of tears
Turn then, most gracious advocate,
your eyes of mercy toward us,
and after this exile
show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb,
Jesus.
O clement, O loving,
O sweet Virgin Mary.

Pray for Us O holy Mother of God

℟. That we may be worthy of the promises of Christ.

Amen
