What is sodium fluoride 5000 ppm toothpaste used for?
Sodium fluoride toothpaste is used for prevention of dental caries especially if you are more prone due to smoking, drinking and eating lots of sugary snacks. Fluoride prevents plaque from forming around your teeth and gums and reduces the risk of tooth enamel erosion. Using a high fluoride toothpaste can help to prevent and reverse the early stages of tooth decay.
How to use Morningside Fluoride 5000 Toothpaste
Brush your teeth carefully up to three times per day, following each meal.
Apply a 2cm ribbon of toothpaste onto the toothbrush for each brushing. A 2cm ribbon provides between 3mg and 5mg of fluoride.

Take time to brush each tooth individually. It should take approximately three minutes to brush your teeth.
Spit out excess toothpaste. Do not swallow.

After refusal of doctors appointment same old same old ring back etc.I was invited at 5.25 to see doctor I drove over immediately.Everything fully explained and checked over I was leaving by 6pm with penicillin for strep throat. Had I followed my doctors receptionist I would probably have suffered longer and increased the chances of a worse infection.IGreat efficient service.

Toothpastes containing 1,350 to 1,500ppm fluoride are the most effective. Your dentist may advise you to use higher-strength toothpaste if you or your child is at particular risk of tooth decay. Children under 3 years old should brush twice daily, with a smear of toothpaste containing at least 1,000ppm fluoride.
Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea may occur soon after ingestion (within 30 minutes) and are accompanied by salivation, haematemesis, and epigastric cramping abdominal pain. These symptoms may persist for 24 hours.
Duraphat toothpaste is a POM and a prescription must be issued by a dentist except when supplied under a PGD by a dental hygienist or dental therapist (see below). It must be supplied with a PIL and be labelled with the following: name of the person to whom the medicine is to be administered.
Your dentist may prescribe a course of high-fluoride treatment if your tooth sensitivity is due to enamel erosion and desensitising toothpastes have not worked. Fluoride naturally re-hardens the enamel of your teeth, which helps soothe tooth sensitivity and helps prevent dental caries.
High-fluoride toothpaste must be prescribed by a dentist. It often can be used for up to 90 days, and it is safe as long as it's used as prescribed. Generally, prescription toothpaste with a high fluoride quantity is only for adults.
A 5000 ppm high fluoride toothpaste reduces the cavity risk even more, estimated to be about a 42% reduction. This is huge for something you only have to spend about 4 minutes doing! Who should use a high fluoride toothpaste? People at the most risk will benefit from it the most…
The most common side effect of fluoride is fluorosis (fluoride-induced tooth discoloration). People with fluorosis develop spots on their teeth that can range from light white to dark brown. These spots typically occur during tooth development, usually in children under the age of 6.
Consider the patient's age when prescribing a high-level fluoride toothpaste. These are suitable for adults and children age six and over. 5000 ppm toothpastes are not generally recommended for use in children under age six due to the risk of fluorosis in the developing teeth.

Duraphat is a prescription-only medication, which means you cannot buy it off the shelf in a supermarket like you would other toothpastes. This is because it contains a higher concentration of fluoride – around four times the amount of normal toothpaste.
In certain circ*mstances your teeth may require larger doses of fluoride than the amount available in your normal toothpaste to remain healthy. High fluoride toothpastes like Duraphat 2800 and Duraphat 5000 help to protect the teeth from plaque and re-mineralise any damaged teeth.
High fluoride toothpaste is a prescription-only toothpaste due to the higher concentration of fluoride compared to regular toothpaste. These higher levels aren't suitable for everyone and can have potential side effects if not used correctly or if excessive amounts are swallowed.
Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel, and when you stop using fluoride toothpaste, your enamel is deprived of this essential mineral. Weakened enamel is more prone to erosion and damage, leading to sensitivity and increased susceptibility to dental problems.
The reason that a prescription is required is due to the high amounts of fluoride in the toothpaste and in the wrong hands that can be dangerous like children. There are many brands and types of prescription toothpaste for example PreviDent, Fluoridex, Clinpro 5000 and GC MI Paste just to name a few.
The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that adults and children over the age of two use fluoride toothpaste with a concentration of 1,000-1,500 parts per million (ppm).
A fluoride content of 0.7 ppm is now considered best for dental health. A concentration that is above 4.0 ppm could be hazardous. Exposure to high concentrations of fluoride during childhood, when teeth are developing, can result in mild dental fluorosis.
National survey data show that prevention of tooth decay can be maintained at the recommended level of 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter of drinking water.
Stannous fluoride provides severe protection against plaque, bacteria, and tooth protection. It also gives the required cavity protection. In contrast, sodium fluoride only helps in the defense against the cavity.
