Propoxyphene is a prescription pain reliever second only 10 aspirin in popularity. Darvon is the most commonly known trade name, but it is also marketed as Dolene, Pro-Gesic-65 and SK-65. No doubt the increased used of Darvon in suicides can be attributed to several factors, including the restricted availability of sleeping pills.
Many doctors, place stricter controls "the much less lethal codeine" than on propoxyphene, believing that propoxyphene is essentially harmless. In addition, Drs. McBay and Hudson say more people use Darvon because "'Medicare will pay for propoxyphene prescriptions but will not pay for aspirin." Fifteen to 20 capsules of propoxyphene many cause death--even smaller amounts are. lethal if taken with alcoholic drinks. The North Carolina doctors say that of 30 propoxyphene deaths in 1974, most have been suicidal overdoses.
